Evaluation
Our preschool
evaluation team consists of a special education teacher and a
psychologist, as well as a speech-language pathologist,
occupational therapist and/or physical therapist, depending on the
expressed areas of concern. Typically, the psychologist requires a
separate appointment for his/her part of the evaluation.
An evaluation is merely an impression of your child's behavior
on that particular day. To complete the picture, the team gathers
your input regarding your childs abilities and difficulties. The
evaluation consists of the following
sections.
- Social History: This component is
conducted by the psychologists. Much of this information is
gathered from your previously completed intake questionnaire,
however further dialog is needed.
- Psychological: This section covers
cognitive skills, adaptive behavior and social-emotional skills.
The cognitive portion addresses your child's thinking and problem
solving; adaptive behaviorpertains to how your child functions in
his/her daily environment(self-help skills); and social-emotional
describes your child's performance and interactions in a variety of
social situations.
- Social Readiness: A special education
teacher conducts this portion of the evaluation consisting of both
cognitive and behavioral observation.
- Communication: Performed by a
speech-language pathologist, this area evaluates
speech(articulation, fluency), language(the use and understanding of
language), feeding/swallowing and hearing.
- Motor: A special education teacher or
psychologist(or if need be, a physical or occupational therapist)
screens your child's fine motor, gross motor and sensory
skills.
